| Minoxin
Topical Solution is a hair growth stimulant,
containing the active ingredient Minoxidil
2%. Minoxin stimulates hair re-grown
in individuals with androgenetic alopecia.
In males, this condition is also known
as male pattern baldness, evidenced
by baldness of the vertex of the scalp.
In females this condition is known as
female diffuse hair loss, evidenced
by thinning of the frontoparietal area.
Monoxidil
2% is scientifically proven and is
FDA approved for hair re-growth. Minoxin
is both effective and safe.
Clinical
studies of Minoxidil 2% in men were
conducted by 27 U.S. medical centres
involving over 2300 patients with
male pattern baldness. After four
months 26% of the patients using Minoxidil
2% had minimal to dense hair growth,
compared to those using placebo. By
the end of one year 48% of the men
in the study, who continued in using
Minoxidil 2% rated their hair growth
as moderate or better.
Clinical
studies of Minoxidil 2% in women were
conducted by physicians in 11 U.S.
and European medical centers involving
over 600 patients with hair loss.
After 8 months, 57% of the patients
using Minoxidil had minimal to moderate
growth.
PRESENTATION:
Minoxin Topical Solution is a clear,
colorless liquid, available in a plastic
bottle of 60ml with applicators.
COMPOSITION:
Minoxin Topical Solution is available
at a concentration of 20mg Minoxidil/ml,
in a solution of alcohol 0.6ml and
propylene glycol 0.2ml.
Topical
application of Minoxidil 2% showed
no systemic effect in the prescribed
dosage, i.e. 2 (two) applications
per day.
PHARMACOKINETICS:
On topical application Minoxidil 2%
is poorly absorbed, from normal intact
scalp with an average of 1.4% (0.3
to 4.5%) of the total applied dose,
reaching systemic circulation .Therefore,
1(one) ml of Minoxidil 2% delivering
20mg Minoxidil to the skin, would
result in absorption of approximately
0.280mg of Minoxidil. Local abrasion
or dermatitis may enhance absorption.
Serum Minoxidil levels resulting from
topical administration are governed
by the drug's percutaneous absorption
rate. Following cessation of topical
dosing approximately 95% of systemically
absorbed Minoxidil is eliminated within
4 days. Metabolic biotransformation
of Minoxidil absorbed following topical
application has not been fully determined.
INDICATIONS
AND USAGE:
Minoxin (Minoxidil 2%) Topical Solution
is indicated for treatment of androgenetic
alopecia, expressed in males as baldness
of the vertex of the scalp and in
females as diffuse hair loss or thinning
of frontoparietal areas. At least
4 (four) months of twice daily applications
of Minoxin (Minoxidil 2%) are generally
required before evidence of hair growth
can be expected.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS:
Minoxin (Minoxidil 2%) Topical solution
is contra-indicated in patients with
a history of hypersensitivity to any
component of the preparation.
Use
during Pregnancy and Lactation:
Minoxin (Minoxidil 2%) like other
drugs should not be used by pregnant
and nursing women.
Paediatric
Use:
Safety and effectiveness of Minoxidil
2% solution in patients under 18 years
of age have not been established.
INTERACTIONS:
There are currently no known interactions
associated with the use of Minoxidil
topical solution.
DOSAGE
AND ADMINISTRATION:
For external use only. Use Minoxin
only as directed. Do not apply to
any other area of the body. A total
dose of 1ml Monoxin should be applied
twice daily on the scalp, beginning
at the center of the affected area.
This dose should be used regardless
of the size of the affected area.
The total daily dose should not exceed
2ml. To avoid any systemic absorption,
wash hands thoroughly after applying
Minoxin. Apply Minoxin when the hair
and scalp are thoroughly dried. Don't
use a hairdryer to speed the drying
of Minoxin solution because blowing
air on the scalp may decrease the
effectiveness of Minoxin.
Over dosage and Accidental Ingestion:
Accidental ingestion may produce systemic
effects related to the vasodilatory
action of Minoxidil. Signs and symptoms
of drug over dosage would most likely
be cardiovascular effects associated
with fluid retention, lowered. blood
pressure and tachycardia. Fluid retention
can be managed with appropriate diuretic
therapy. Tachycardia can be controlled
by administration of a beta-adrenergic
blocking agent. Hypotension should
be treated by intravenous administration
of normal saline. Sympathomimetic
drugs, such as norepinephrine and
epinephrine should be avoided because
of their excessive cardiac stimulating
avtivity.
