Herpetic
diseases constitute a serious threat
to the well-being of afflicted individuals
and pose a major public health hazard.
Viru-Merz contains the unique anti-viral
agent, tromantadine. Tromantadine the
first anti-viral ever developed which
specifically inhibits the activity of
herpes viruses Type-I Oral Type and
Type-II Genital Type. Tromantadine (Viru-Merz)
is one of the several substances that
were independently developed through
the successful research efforts of Merz+
Co Germany.
STRUCTURE
AND PROPERTIES OF VIRUSES:
Viruses are the smallest infectious
entities in existence, their diameters
range from 10 to 300mm. The core of
the virus consists of the viral genome,
which is responsible for the genetic
instructions needed for the synthesis
of structural and functional proteins
vital to the survival and reproduction
of the virus. By utilizing the metabolic
processes of host cells, viruses are
able to thrive, reproduce and cause
disease.
The
viral genome is composed either of
rihonucleic acid (RNA) or deoxyribonucleic
acid (DNA). It is enclosed in a symmetrical
protein shell, the CAPSID. The latter
protects the nucleic acid from the
extracellular environment and facilitates
viral penetration into the host cell.
Herpes viruses belong to the large
group of DNA viruses. They are infectious
to man. They are of two types.
TYPE
I: ORAL TYPE
Type
I diseases are mainly localized in
the facial region. Frequent manifestations
are herpes labialis, herpes nasalis,
herpes facialis.
TYPE
II: GENITAL TYPE
Type
II virus usually causes herpetic eruptions
in the genital and progenital region.
There exists a strong co-relation
between herpes genitalis and carcinoma
of cervix.
PRESENTATION:
Viru -Merz Gel contains tromantadine
in hydrogel base "serol".
Serol is a special base which is washable
and enhances the contact time of tromantadine
on the skin.
COMPOSITION:
5G Gel contains 50mg (1% w/w) Tromantadine
Hyderochloride.
MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Tromantadine, the active ingredient
of Viru-Merz exerts its anti-viral
effect on several steps of the viral
activity cycle-without interfering
with the genetic information of the
host cell.
Viru-Merz acts on the following phases
of viral replication.
- Impedes
the absorption of the virus to the
host cell by changing the glycoproteins
of the host cells.
- Inhibits
the penetration of the virus.
- Prevents
the "un-coating phase"
this means that the break-down of
the virus and release of its infectious
genetic is inhibited.
- Viru-Merz
also prevents the viral spreading
within the skin tissue.
DOSE
AND MODE OF APPLICATION:
Apply enough gel to the affected skin
areas to cover the entire herpes focus
and rub in gently, repeat 3-5 times
a day. If no improvement has appeared
within 2 days of the start of treatment,
discontinue use.
INDICATION:
For the treatment of the initial symptoms
of herpes simplex infections of the
skin and semi-mucous membranes (e.g.
tingling, stinging, itching, tautness,
pain and swelling before vesicle formation).
HERPES
INFECTIONS TYPE-1
Herpes
labialis
Herpes nasalis
Hepes facialis
Gingivostomatitis herpetica
Eczema herpeticum
Recurrent manifestations of herpes
simplex
Dermal manifestation of herpes zoster
(shingles)
HERPES
INFECTION TYPE-II
Herpetic eruptions in the genital
and progenital region.
SIDE-EFFECTS:
Treatment with Viru-Merz can give
rise to skin hypersensitivity reactions
(contact allergies)even when the preparation
has previously been well tolerated.
CONTRA-INDICATION:
Viru-Merz must not be used in herpes
simplex infections after the vesicles
have ruptured. The use of Viru-Merz
during pregnancy has so far not revealed
any harmful effects. However in early
pregnancy, Viru-Merz as with all drugs,
should only be used after consulting
a physician.
